The project is located in the desert resort area of Minqin County, Gansu Province, northwest China. The scenic area mainly features ecological sightseeing, desert experience, and rural tourism. As a resort hotel, the main functions of this building include guest rooms, lobby, banquet hall, cafeteria, fitness center, etc.
Drawing on traditional ecological experiences from desert regions, the public areas of the building are "nestled" within a sandpit, embracing a small lake unique to this desert. The sand dunes are utilized to shield against the strong winter winds from the west. All guest rooms face south, avoiding the predominant winter wind direction and reducing solar radiation in summer. The building fully utilizes the terrain for wind shelter, terrace viewing, and traffic diversion. The architectural form blends with the desert, integrating seamlessly into the overall landscape.
The architectural form is elegant and agile, fitting the positioning of sports and amusement in the desert scenic area. The building shape, conforming to the terrain, resembles the traditional Chinese ruyi, which symbolizes "auspiciousness". Its smooth and gentle form embodies the beauty of gentleness and modesty in traditional Chinese culture. The soft curves of the building's roof create a strong contrast in light and shadow under sunlight, providing different visual experiences whether viewed from the front, the side, or against the sun.
All hotel rooms face south, offering a panoramic view of the sand sea. Special themed rooms such as starry sky rooms and sand therapy rooms are also available. By combining different spaces and using various materials, the diversity of the space is perceived, providing visitors with a rich architectural experience and attracting guests from all over the country.
The building is designed with sustainability in mind. Through software simulation, the cumulative daily radiation on the building's surface in summer is calculated. Reasonable shading measures and structures are adopted for key sunscreen areas to optimize the building's thermal performance and reduce energy consumption. By utilizing local materials such as sandbags and gabion baskets, the construction of landscapes and some building components is completed, reducing material transportation and carbon emissions.
