About The Entry
Suwen Qin of DingLiang is innovatively crafted to bridge a millennium of qin tradition with contemporary life. Its name draws from “the inquiry within stillness,” evoking an inner dialogue between the player and the qin, without requiring resolution. Across three dimensions—form, acoustics, and craftsmanship—the instrument achieves an organic synthesis of reverence for the past and innovation for the present. The design embodies both a sincere tribute to Tang dynasty elegance and a renewal of ancient wisdom through contemporary expression.
Modeled on the Tang dynasty qin preserved at Horyuji Temple, its silhouette faithfully echoes the balance of horizontal and vertical lines and the interplay of square and round contours. The overall visual weight is stable, yet the lines flow with ethereal lightness, capturing the refined spirit of its Tang dynasty predecessor. Adapted for modern lifestyles, its dimensions have been scientifically refined to fit easily in a car trunk, greatly expanding where and how it can be enjoyed. Notably, the internal chamber is shaped through precision acoustic engineering, ensuring that, even in its compact form, the instrument delivers the rich tone and full resonance expected of a full-sized qin. This innovation overcomes the thin, underdeveloped tone commonly associated with smaller instruments.
Committed to meticulous craftsmanship, the instrument is built from natural lacquer, deer antler ash, and century-old wood, carrying forward the heritage of traditional qin making. Its innovative matte-textured lacquer finish not only retains the warm, organic quality but also creates a unique, anti-slip surface, addressing the stickiness and slippage caused by perspiration during play and enhancing the overall playing experience. Even in its details, the instrument builds upon classical foundations, enhanced with a widened string anchor at the tail and optimized body proportions, making finger movement across the strings easier and more comfortable.
