The service area is located in Meizhou, at the confluence of mountains and waterways within the Han River basin. The Han River has long nourished both banks: the mountainous region of Meizhou inhabited by the Hakka people on one side, and the plains inhabited by the Chaoshan people on the other. This has given rise to the distinctive “semi-mountain Hakka (Chao-Hakka)” culture. Centered on the theme “Connected by Water · Semi-Mountain Chao-Hakka,” the project aims to create a “museum-style commercial experience” mall that links and interprets these two cultures.
The eastern zone faces Meizhou and focuses on Hakka culture. The entrance ceiling adopts a herringbone form that echoes the structural logic of traditional Hakka architecture, referencing purlins and rafters, and works together with the installation “I Am a Hakka” to evoke cultural resonance. In the leisure area, the ceiling installation “Thousands of Households” uses the Hakka tulou as a metaphor for countless illuminated homes, integrating lighting and shading functions.
The western zone faces the Chaoshan region and expresses the fusion of Chao and Hakka cultures. The entrance ceiling is composed of the “dou - object shaped like a cup” structural motif, paired with sailboat-inspired seating installations to narrate a scene of seafaring endeavor and perseverance. The leisure area continues the “dou” formal language, where a two-tone ceiling and diamond-shaped seating create a visual dialogue between heaven and earth.
The project extensively incorporates locally sourced stone and recycled materials, combined with tree-canopy shading and an intelligent circulating water system, to achieve low-carbon, sustainable operation and a balanced integration of ecology and aesthetics.
