“Rotation of Heaven and Earth” Art Installation

Rotation of Heaven and Earth is a large-scale art installation designed for the eastern plaza of the Shuiche Service Area on the Meishan Expressway. Rooted in Hakka agrarian civilization, the work deconstructs the traditional waterwheel into minimalist linear forms. Through the contrast between the stillness of geometric structures and the dynamism of circular motion, it poetically expresses the philosophical imagery of the rotation of heaven and earth.
The installation is arranged in response to the architectural flow, with an elongated massing that follows the building’s trajectory. The towering waterwheel form is not only a visual focal point, but also a cultural medium that the public can perceive and interact with. The continuously circulating water symbolizes the endless vitality of nature and the diligence and perseverance of the Hakka people. Its rotating gesture of “the turning of heaven and earth” is transformed into a dynamic narrative within a contemporary setting. Here, flowing water, rotating forms, and the viewer’s gaze converge, elevating a brief pause into a profound dialogue with Hakka culture.
The main structure is made of stainless steel, with a modular design that facilitates on-site assembly and reduces the carbon footprint. The corrosion-resistant surface treatment is well suited to the hot and humid climate of Lingnan, while also lowering maintenance costs and resource consumption.
