The Hopewell 2 (Hopewell Centre II) redevelopment in Wan Chai is a major urban renewal project that integrates large scale commercial and hotel development with significant landscape and public realm improvements. Situated adjacent to the existing Hopewell Centre, the project includes a conference hotel, retail podium, and a new green park that forms a key component of the surrounding landscape framework. This green park establishes a vital open space anchor within the dense urban setting of Kennedy Road and Ship Street, supporting a more walkable and accessible hillside environment.
A central landscape objective of the redevelopment is the creation of 5,880 square metres of public open space, providing generous areas for passive recreation, shaded gathering zones, and visually cohesive planting design that softens the massing of the built structures. The open space network is designed to enhance pedestrian permeability across the steep topography, linking upper and lower street levels through terraces, stepped paths, and landscaped slopes. These elements improve microclimate conditions while offering comfortable circulation routes that integrate seamlessly with the urban fabric.
The landscape strategy also incorporates strong heritage considerations. As part of the revised scheme, the development commits to the preservation and revitalisation of Nam Koo Terrace, a Grade I historic building adjacent to the site. The land surrounding the terrace—also owned by the developer—will be transformed into publicly accessible gardens, enhancing cultural value and strengthening the landscape’s identity within Wan Chai’s evolving urban context. These heritage gardens are envisioned to blend contemporary planting with historically appropriate materials and spatial programming, creating a meaningful interface between past and present.
Overall, the landscape design for Hopewell 2 aims to deliver an interconnected green network that elevates urban quality, enhances biodiversity, and contributes to broader district level regeneration. By combining open space, heritage interpretation, and environmentally responsive design, the redevelopment transforms the hillside into a more sustainable, people focused, and ecologically resilient environment while supporting Wan Chai’s continued urban revitalisation.
