Hua Ting Hotel & Towers Shanghai, a landmark named after the ancient place “Huating,” has been destined for distinction since its founding in 1983. As China’s first five-star hotel established through a Sino-foreign joint venture, it served as Shanghai’s inaugural gateway to the world during the early days of reform and opening-up. It became a witness to countless national “firsts”: the first benchmark for foreign-oriented hospitality, the pioneer of fashionable hotel service models, and a symbol of modern aspiration for an entire generation—embodied in its 800 guest rooms.
In the recent renovation, the design team embraced the guiding principle of “honoring a classic era while continuing the modern narrative.” Striking a thoughtful balance between preservation and innovation, the project reimagines Hua Ting’s gentlemanly charm through the lens of contemporary elegance.
Red—etched into the collective memory of generations—was retained as the hotel’s signature color. Stone materials removed during the 1983 renovation were carefully preserved and engraved with “1983,” transforming them into sculptural elements that anchor the space in time.
The original 800 compact rooms have been reconfigured into a diverse range of layouts—Fanghua, Shaoguang, Zanxing, Liujin, and Jinxiu—from cozy single rooms to multifunctional suites designed for both business and leisure. Circulation and spatial flow were restructured to align with the operational logic of contemporary hospitality.
