Located along the scenic Youshui River in Baojing, Sifangcheng Archaeological Park embodies a paradigm shift in heritage conservation. It reimagines a site of dual legacy — ancient Han Dynasty ruins and 20th-century industrial factory remains — as a world-class cultural destination. The master plan transforms the site into a "living museum," offering visitors the opportunity to experience history through a synthesis of archaeology, nature, and advanced digital immersion.
Guided by the aesthetic philosophy of "White as Black," inspired by traditional Chinese landscape painting, the design strategy revolves around "light intervention and deep perception." The centerpiece is the adaptive reuse of the abandoned factory as a modern archaeological museum. Employing reflective mirror facades and rammed earth textures, the architecture achieves a "vanishing" effect, dissolving the building’s mass to prioritize the visual dominance of the ancient ruins and the surrounding Wuling Mountains.
Visitors are guided through the "Sifang Eight Scenes," a poetic sequence of spatial experiences. Key highlights include the "Time Corridor," a linear landscape axis connecting the mountains to the river; the "Sunlight Dongting" lobby, where natural light floods the industrial atrium; and the "Dongting Sundial," which innovatively transforms the original factory chimney into a monumental timekeeping landmark.
Beyond the physical realm, the park establishes a "boundless" public space with the "Unlock Sifangcheng" metaverse. This digital layer offers AR-enhanced ruin tours and a "Mystery Forest" VR experience that allows visitors to witness the "Qin-Chu Hegemony" battles and a reconstruction of ancient life in real time. By weaving together the "Three Nodes, One Belt, and Five Districts," the park revitalizes the region’s cultural identity. It creates a sanctuary where the industrial past and ancient history coexist in a story embedded in nature.
