Insight & Challenge:
Hemiplegic patients often experience persistent low temperature in the affected limb due to impaired neurovascular regulation. This not only causes discomfort but also quietly exacerbates circulatory deterioration, muscle spasms, and ulcer risks. Nearly half of these patients are unable to actively perceive or express their temperature needs due to sensory or cognitive impairments, while traditional warming methods carry burn risks and rely on manual monitoring. The challenge we face is to provide safe, unobtrusive warmth—avoiding excessive intrusion into patients' sense of autonomy and bodily privacy, while also relieving caregivers from constant anxiety.
Design & Strategy:
Based on the principle of "using the healthy side's temperature as a benchmark," we designed the EMBRA intelligent sock pair system. The sock on the healthy side contains discreet sensors that collect data in real time; the sock on the affected side uses graphene material to provide gentle, evenly distributed heating that gradually approaches the healthy side's temperature, enabling a "physiological dialogue" with the body. With an appearance that passes for ordinary socks, it helps alleviate patient stigma, while its intelligent, unobtrusive mode guards the patient’s autonomy and privacy. The system further integrates thermochromic luminous stitching and a companion app, freeing caregivers from constant worry and delivering a steady stream of data for long-term health management.
