The Luminous Sea

“The Luminous Sea” is a design project inspired by the bioluminescent phenomenon known as the Blue Tears, focusing on its often-overlooked duality—the red tide that appears by day, and the ethereal blue glow that illuminates the coastline at night. Through contrast and transformation, the design invites viewers to reconsider the Blue Tears not only as a romantic spectacle but also as a natural phenomenon that embodies both beauty and warning.

The packaging adopts a book-box structure, symbolizing discovery and the unfolding of knowledge. Its exterior draws inspiration from the coastal landscape of the Matsu Islands, shaped by rugged reefs and textured to resemble Blue Tears washed ashore. The outer sleeve features flowing visual elements, evoking the moment when bioluminescent waves surge onto land with the tide.

Upon removing the sleeve and opening the box, the familiar imagery of a glowing blue sea gradually shifts into the red tide seen in daylight. This visual transition reflects the dual nature of the Blue Tears, revealing a lesser-known face of the phenomenon—one that exists beyond its enchanting nighttime glow. Through the act of opening, the design leads the viewer from the known to the unknown, awakening curiosity and anticipation for the story contained within the book.
