Most AI education products put a chatbot in front of the student. PLUS took the opposite approach — placing AI behind the human tutor.
PLUS is an AI-augmented tutoring platform from a Carnegie Mellon and Stanford team that makes expert one-on-one math tutoring accessible at $20/month, replacing what traditionally costs families $2,000. The platform pairs K-12 students falling behind in math with trained college tutors who are supported, not replaced, by artificial intelligence.
Designing this system meant looking beyond the screen. Four distinct users — tutors, students, supervisors, and researchers — each need different things at different moments. A service blueprint mapping these relationships revealed that the highest-leverage design opportunities weren't student-facing. They were in the spaces between sessions: preparation, live support, reflection, and oversight.
The tutor experience moves through three AI-augmented modes. Before sessions, tutors train through simulations — practicing real scenarios like a student saying "I'm just not good at math." During sessions, a co-pilot surfaces strategies and student momentum in real time, without the student ever seeing the AI. After sessions, coaching feedback helps tutors improve between sessions, not just during them.
For supervisors, the platform surfaces which tutors need support and where to direct resources. For researchers, it turns thousands of session transcripts into patterns that reveal what teaching strategies actually work.
The system runs on a value loop: funding trains college tutors, tutors serve under-resourced schools, sessions generate evidence, and evidence attracts the next round of support. As the loop runs, AI gets sharper, training gets faster, and cost per student drops.
Across 7 states, 250+ trained college tutors have delivered 100,000+ hours of expert math support — at one hundredth the cost of traditional private tutoring.
Expert tutoring shouldn't be a luxury. PLUS is making it infrastructure.
