Red Rhyme in Banyan Shade: Reconstruction and Expansion Design of Dehong Party School
Situated on the southwest frontier of China, Dehong is renowned for its subtropical rainforest climate. This project orchestrates a profound dialogue between "architecture and high-density nature." Confronting the lush, native ancient trees on the site, the design rejects the conventional "tabula rasa" approach. Instead, it establishes a vision to "dissolve into the greenery and grow from the red soil," creating a modern academy that embodies the unique charm of the Dai ethnic region.
1. Strategic Innovation: Reverse Design (Eco-Morphology) The design adopts a "Tree-Defined Form" strategy. The existing ancient tree community was designated as an inviolable "Green Redline." Consequently, the architectural volume actively retreats, squeezes, and deforms around these green cores to generate multiple irregular ecological courtyards. This act of "yielding" not only preserves the site's memory but also establishes a micro-climate regulation system where "architecture encloses trees, and trees nourish architecture."
2. Architectural Character: Contemporary Translation of Dai Style The architecture deeply responds to the regional context. The facade primarily utilizes fair-faced red bricks, echoing Dehong's unique red soil geology. The roof geometrically abstracts the traditional Dai "Double-eaved Xieshan" style, outlining a skyline that implies "layered emerald forests." Drawing on the wisdom of tropical "Stilt-style" (Ganlan) architecture, the ground floor creates all-weather "Grey Spaces" through continuous arched corridors, achieving both passive energy conservation and a blurring of physical boundaries between the interior and exterior.
3. Genius Loci With "red bricks as the skeleton and green trees as the soul," the project balances the solemn functionality of the school with the wildness of nature through extreme restraint. It provides a demonstrative paradigm for the renewal of public buildings in border ethnic regions, vividly exemplifying the symbiosis between humanity and nature.
