Mt. Reddomain in Sichuan has one rare blue glacier that is one of China's most visited natural landmarks. Thousands of tourists arrive with flowers to take pictures with the glacier. Yet, the tourists leave their trash behind and now the glacier is surrounded by withered flowers and pollution. The more people performed their love of nature online, the worse the real place got.
At TAG Studio, we thought: what if recycling your trash was more rewarding than taking a pretty picture while polluting? So we created Glacier Bloom. It is a large-scale interactive light sculpture built from concentric rings of recyclable and translucent PETG plastic. We 3D-printed it using parametric algorithms to look like a flower frozen mid-bloom.
The sculpture was installed at MixC Chengdu (one of China's biggest shopping malls) with a recycling bin at its base. Drop your trash in, and a sensor fires immediately. Light pulses shoot upward through the rings. The act of throwing something down becomes a flower growing up.
At the centre of the sculpture, a unique AI-generated flower blooms on screen in real time, drawn from actual alpine plant species native to the glacier region. Each one is completely unique. A dynamic QR code then lets visitors claim their unique flower to show their contribution towards nature. The sculpture generated over 3,000 recycling interactions, a direct contribution towards nature.
