MixC Shenzhen Bay is an 80,000sqm high-end, lifestyle-oriented, retail, dining, entertainment (RDE) destination that blends the urban context with art, landscape and culture. Developed by China Resources (CR), MixC Shenzhen Bay anchors a wider, mixed-use destination developed as the new city headquarters for this leading property developer in China.
The architecture is inspired by an open box concept with Lead8 choosing to invert the traditional ‘closed box’ retail format.
The architectural concept of ‘land and floating islands’ takes inspiration from the symbolic coastal mangrove forest of Shenzhen to create an inviting and lively environment. The overall design objective was to create a sense of combined luxury between a blended exterior and interior.
The exterior is defined by a collection of ‘floating’ glass boxes which deliver sunlight and sightlines to the interior environment. To ensure connectivity across the retail lots, pedestrian-friendly bridge links allow visitors a seamless exploration of the development.
The extensive use of various stone materials across the building’s façade is accented with occasional bulged cut stones, bringing a striking design across the light-beige coloured sandstone. The façade also introduces an integrated composition of retail-art-technology ranging from storefronts to interactive media art wall and multimedia screens.
Embracing the symbiotic relationship between the natural environment and the development, various design interventions are implemented to extend this green corridor into the scheme to provide a true connection with the city’s context and urban grain.
Capitalising on the sweeping views of the waterfront and aesthetically pleasing landscape, part of the rooftop garden is envisaged as an urban farm to reconnect people with nature, whilst enhancing the city’s context and urban grain. An abundance of greenery, landscape and floating island-inspired pavilions are designed in a continuous loop to reflect the flow of the natural environment.
Leveraging on the surrounding famous green belt and coastal mangrove forest in Shenzhen, MixC Shenzhen Bay is a development that blends sustainability and landscape with cultural references from the city.
