West Lake Villa is a state guest hotel newly built as a reception center of G20 summit, which is located beneath Chuyangtai of the southern foothill of Geling Mountain, West Lake, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The landscape design sought to create secluded buildings, luxuriant woods, elegant flowers and appreciable landscapes at all seasons. The designers retained existing trees and created buildings that nestle in woods and complement the greenery, thus forming varying distinctive views with each moving step.

The following design strategies were adopted:

Create landscape spots based on terrain. Respect existing natural terrain and, on the basis, create landscape spots.

Create landscapes based on trees. There are 5 existing old and famous trees and 278 key arbors. By retaining and sorting out these trees, the designers created landscapes that combined trees.

Add colorful flowers to landscapes. Flowers are dotted along the mountain trails and bloom in the courtyard.

The design of the welcoming garden emphasizes creating a warm greeting effect and a soft and tender temperament consistent with that of West Lake. Several patches of woods in the garden were reserved and paths were built at the site of the demolished buildings as far as possible and cleverly bypassed tall trees. The welcoming square is situated in between, with a dignified main building on the north, a spacious lawn on the south and magnificent, elegant and beautiful towering old trees on the left and right sides.

The design of the mountain garden highlights a quaint and natural charm. The landscape corridor was built based on the mountain terrain and winds through the thick woods. Combined with trees, the pavilions were set up to offer places for visitors to stop by and rest. Rainwater was collected in low-lying places of the mountain to gather into a clear spring that creates elegance of the mountain creeks. The existing walls were properly cleaned, maintained and reserved, so as to display a quaint and natural charm.

The mountain adds more charms to the building, while the trees accentuates the tranquility of the environment, hence making the reception center look open, deep, dignified and magnificent.
