Urban Design Calibration Of The 18plots Within Hengqin CBD

Hengqin is a new emerging urban development island outside the city of Zhuhai. At the tip of Hengqin lies a small island just at the crossing of the Pearl River waterway branches. This small island is also known as Hengqin Financial Island. Together with the city of Macao and Zhuhai land, they form the Cross Gate Central Business Zone.



In accordance to the overall plan of the Zhuhai Municipal Government for Hengqin and Hengqin Financial Island, almost 10 land plots are already under construction or almost completed. Another 18 land plots are still undergoing design process, but the overall urban character seems to be lacking cohesion and integrity.



The purpose of this Study is to carry out a comprehensive planning evaluation with aim for a betterment of the 18 land plots. By analyzing the main planning issues of spatial structure, urban interface and transport links, we established integral frameworks from strategic planning to guiding principles. Such main strategies include reorganization of urban spaces, control of urban interfaces, re-arrangement of urban transport network and the establishment of public spatial systems. With studies on public spaces, urban skylines, viewing corridors, glare control, glazing ratio, road network and urban lighting design, we then formulated a new urban design exemplar guide.



We hope that through such systematic and methodological exploration, the study will reinforce the characteristics of the urban spatial environment and provide a way to invigorate the urban vitality and to capture the soul of the city.



In contrast to Macau’s eclectic architectural collage of modern buildings which resulted in a visually cluttered scene from across the river, the urban language of Hengqin Financial Island and its surrounding CBD aim to formulate a harmonious character that can be shaped for a disciplined and well-mannered architectural style.



Complimentary to Macau’s vibrant entertainment industry, the functional aim of Hengqin Financial Island is to provide the business, cultural and living experience at this strategic location. This purpose will be the motivation of a unique urban space experience mingled with a local strong character.
