Only spatial design based on daily life details can truly create the interaction and connection between the occupants and the space. Good designers often step into the role of the occupant, experiencer, and maintainer of the space. This not only takes rational analysis of the architectural and interior structure, background, material etc., but also awareness of the spatial metaphors of social status and needs of experience and emotions, in order to design and realize artistically.

In this 5-storey, nearly 1700㎡ villa in Yunnan, ZPD precisely balances the daily usage and interactivity of “home”, and lays out the different spaces according to functional needs. Using “contemporary Oriental” as base tone with modern minimalistic design language, ZPD presents life’s poetry and shapes family warmth.

Natural lighting, artistic sequence and life’s footprints interact orderly, Oriental elegance and contemporary simplicity thrive together to portray life’s aesthetic texture, comfortable experience, and extraordinary quality.

The balance between publicness and privacy is an important factor in the design process. Through careful planning, the designer creates living spaces that carry different occupants’ respective interests and lifestyle, and at the same time connect with each other emotionally.

“The overall design is the key to activating spatial vigour, the sunken courtyard going down to underground level B2 is the core of the design. In the original structure, the sunken courtyard goes down to B1 only, making B2 a relatively closed-off space. Our solution was to allow nature to bring more vitality to the space.”

In order to break the spatial limitation, the designer lowers the sunken courtyard down to B2, forming a two-storey high ceiling, introducing natural light and scenery to the underground space. With open, simplistic design methods, this measure makes the underground space the main public interaction space of the household, at the same time serves an outward socialization function.
