Background

The project is located in the fringe area of the downtown of Guiyang, China, with geological conditions of rocky desertification. The red line area of the site is about 6500 m2, and the project cost is about 1000 RMB/m2.

Overall Concept and Vision

The project features the theme of “Seen•Unseen”. We selectively express the visual scene while keeping under restraint and try not to destroy the "energy field" of the site itself.

Design Strategy

Adapt to Local Conditions -- Present the Real Scenery

The design is not limited to a single form or aesthetic, allowing the layout of the space to follow the transition, extension, and compression of the original site to form a unique linear space. The original texture and orientation of the site guide people to have a dialogue with the "real" scenery of the site.

Space Reorganization - Allow the Scenery Penetrate

The functions of reception, meeting and passage, which were originally concentrated in isolated buildings, are integrated into different scenes, so that there is no longer a master-slave control relationship between buildings and landscape. Meanwhile, with dramatic space rhythm and strong light and shadow, it breaks through the shackles of formal aesthetics and creatively injects heat and vitality into the site.

Local Materials - Allow the Scenery Take Root

The project does not cut down a tree, but preserves all the original stones in the site, and even excavates downward to expose more sections. Combined with high walls and long and narrow paths, the original vivid scenery can be presented and perceived.

Conclusion

In the process of analyzing the site, the design team deeply understood the situation, problems and potential future opportunities of the area where the site is located, and emphasized the ecological properties of the original site and the living conditions of residents. Finally, with the precipitation of time, it grows its own traces of life, condenses in the conflict and gives birth to a new harmonious relationship.
