X-Rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. His discovery led to radiographic images that could reveal the bones and inner tissues encased within a human body. Inspired by these phantom bodily images caught on medical film, Free Follow sought to grant a bodily presence to these ghost-like after images. Like a spirit recalled to possess a corporeal form, we are reminded that we exist in two realms, the physical and the spiritual. Where the soul ends and the body begins presents questions about the space we occupy and what clothing is called upon to cover. Clothing, so often experienced as a second skin in close contact with our body seems to contain and repress the spirit. Here, through Liu’s avant-garde artistry, clothing is reimagined as a lightweight translucent and ethereal nebula allowing the spirit to freely flow off the flat surface of the body. Alive, free, undulating and vibrating, Free Flow celebrates the spirit and uses the same medical films that inspired the collection to challenge.
