Artist Fan Cheng-Zong built the majestic Dragon Palace in the shape of a horseshoe crab, which is an ancient marine species endemic to Kinmen Island. The wooden structure exudes ceremonial serenity from the inside out. Japanese artist Daisuke Nagamoto used five giant metal circles to echo the glory of the Olympic gold medal won by a native Kinmen athlete. Mexican artist Lua Rivera created large-scale sculptures of purple crystals that emerge from the ground to symbolize the islands as floating gems of the sea. The Kinmen-native Leechen Studio based its work on poet Luo Fu’s work “Death of a Stone Cell” and imagined spatial frontline poetry. Artist Hu Jin-Xiang’s father served in the military his entire life and even fought in the historic Battle of Guningtou. To honor his father, Hu interweaved light and song on the Beishan Broadcasting Wall. The 2021 Kinmen Ocean Art Festival will begin in October. For the main theme “2021 Tranquil Places”, ten artist teams from Kinmen, Taiwan, Japan, and Mexico collaborated with five local communities to create spectacular landscape art installations in the Jinning Township of Kinmen County. For the three sub-themes—ecological tranquility, living tranquility, and historical tranquility, the artists showcased their unique renditions with materials and techniques ranging from traditional wood and bamboo and modern fibers to cutting-edge digital art and 3D printing.
