Two sisters, owners of identical neighboring flats across the hall, have entrusted the designer with both their new properties during rough-in stage. In comparison to the overall pastel impression at the elder sister’s, the younger one’s opts for a different theme featuring direct lighting and color contrast in playing up spatial temperament.

Inspired by the owner couple’s unique style, hospitable nature and their fondness for collectibles and motorcycles, the designer takes the approach to start from an open-plan layout. The spatial details are further introduced by display cabinets purposely assigned for each area around house.

Although closely connected, each of the living and dining zones has been delineated by specific floor material and pattern, as if a framework that underlines field identity. The flooring design also acts effectively in neutralizing intense color of custom-made furniture, allowing a person to feel settled in and stay focused to savor the present moments.

Besides thoughtful planning in terms of infrastructure, the key challenge is to render appropriate balance between spatial flexibility and personal privacy. By understanding the owner couple and the child’s activity patterns and needs, the common area setup puts consideration to both openness and versatility. The boundaries of living, reading, dining and kitchen zones are freed up altogether for easy family interaction. The multi-purpose guestroom is featured with sliding partitions that can be pulled out of sight and to accommodate more hallway space whenever needed. The two front balconies have also been transformed to become little gardens, complementing routine life with a splash of sunshine and cheery greenery.
