PARADISE WALK, HUAYING-JIANGNANLI

Covering an area of 11.9 hectares, the project is located at a kind of boundary space between the old Huaying City and Yingxi New City in Guang 'an, Sichuan. Named ‘Paradise Walk’, this Chinese commercial street is the north-south axis of the site, connecting the old and new town as well as the past and present. According to the commercial space in the Southern Song Dynasty, this design scheme integrates the regional linkage, spatial vitality, context inheritance, etc. through the regional perspective although it seems inward and closed. Therefore, ‘Paradise Walk’ is an inter street of the residential area as well as the urban artery to active the internal core functions and the urban driving force continually by scene creation.

With a 17m’height difference, the site falls from northwest to southeast continuously until it is level with the east side road. So the design scheme takes advantages of the current situations to deal with the relationship between street scale, context and building density. This kind of design technique makes the‘Paradise Walk’ merge with the site, which explains the project’s physical existence gracefully, modestly but completely.

Abstract from the spatial standards of Chinese classical architecture, the layout of ‘Paradise Walk’ displays sceneries with changing view-points based on the design techniques of connecting a series of multiple landscape nodes. Leveled with shops and surrounding roads in different elevations, the project makes a dialogue with the city by a multi-entry commercial facade externally; meanwhile, with both complicated and diversified design strategies, it constructs a complete and coherent open space structure internally to embody the oriental aesthetics by secondary commercial elevations and specified building scales, integrating its forms and spirits.
