We use our own digital software called mov.i.see to create unique, asymmetrical and non-repeat digital patterns. Mov.i.see uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details that are not possible solely by programming. Our patterns are therefore very different from those created using traditional methods, such as mirroring or rotating. The patterns are finished by hand and then digitally-printed onto natural fabrics. Digital printing enables us to reproduce the fine detail of the original designs whilst retaining their sense of movement and special colour combinations.

Our 2022 ‘Phantasm’ scarf collection comprises nine patterns and is our personal creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Physically stranded in our UK and Taiwan design studios during national lockdowns, we longed to escape to a utopian paradise, and envisaged a journey to a fantastical world. The patterns in this collection capture that whirlwind adventure across mesmerising landscapes.

The challenge was to produce patterns that were inspired by the peculiar and difficult circumstances of the pandemic but were colourful, optimistic and playful. We began by researching thematic concepts, ideas and colour-ways, gathering visual data and experimenting with our software to create the new patterns. Having selected appropriate images and videos, we used, for the first time, layered design to bridge the gap between the figurative and the abstract, and thus create a series of patterns that represent moments of the imaginary journey to an alternative world: from the desert to the ocean, starry sky to outer space and beyond. We modified the patterns whilst they were being created, rather than allow the software to wholly dictate the design; consequently, the patterns reveal the authorship of the designer.

With asymmetrical and exclusive colour combinations, the gender-neutral scarves can be worn in different ways, to reflect individual expression and fit changing fashion needs and occasions. The patterns are printed with ink free of heavy metals which goes through the pure wool, making each pattern double-sided. The wool is specially treated so that it is very comfortable and non-abrasive to the touch. Our scarves make a bold fashion statement.
