Bar California · Golden Bay

The Bar California located on a corner sector of the biggest new mall at Golden Bay District, Zhuhai, a coastal city in south China. Through the L-shape floor-to-ceiling window, crossing the surface of an artificial lake, there is a clear view of the Citizen Art Center designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Our design challenges is how to create boutique bar with vintage-American style, which requested by clients, within a modern architectural shopping mall. Inspired by the lake near by and the clients, Angela’s previous quay business experience, our idea is to create the space as a metaphor of vintage yachts mooring by the bay.



The round-corner-design details,which applied on the yacht to prevent sailors get injured during Sea swing, are also appropriate for tipsy guests at the bar. Low ceiling, just like seats in the yacht, will offer more intimacy for guests who need to have close chats. Ropes, this raw and natural material are applied in overall details with functions, such as railing fence, soft surfaces of the concrete post and bar facade to prevent bump of body. They also serve as a functional design feature symbolizing the mooring rope of quay. It is a Tipsy Journey to America Nouveau Vintage.





The spacial strategy is to layout a “huge furniture”, which is a unit combined with bar counter and back kitchen, in the middle of the entire interior space. The bar counter follow the outline of the L-shape floor-to-ceiling window to make it a maximum display view to people passing by. Interior space are divided into four sectors with different spacial experience. The front facade sector with open window is the most public zone for guests who wants to get close the the street and the live Performing stage. The high table sector near the bar counter is cozy and semi-public. The low ceiling sector offer a intimate and semi-private space, while there is a sofa sector at the back provide the most private zone for guests.
