1 Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Hi, My name is Kaiyuan Xu, A Fashion Designer and Visual Artist from Shanghai China. I’m recently graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a master degree in Fashion Design, where I explores different perspectives and pushes boundaries with my creative and innovative collections. With a background in Fashion Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Coventry University,I have developed skills in fashion illustration, sewing, drafting patterns, and Design concepts. I have applied these skills in various projects, such as my latest collection ‘Lusus Vase’, I take the view of a biological instinct and explores how they are constructed. Not only does this showcase the boundary pushing tendencies, but it also shows my knack for staying curious, something that is prevalent in my work.

2 What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Originally from Shanghai, a dynamic international city, I have always influenced by the modern environment, including its architectures and fashion brands. This led me to choose fashion design as my major. While pursing my undergraduate degree in Coventry, I focused on ready-to-wear for women’s clothing. Throughout the design process, I frequently embarked on research journeys to museums, drawing inspiration from various artworks. After graduating, I moved to Chicago, a vibrant city renowned for its artistic atmosphere.Pursuing my master’s degree at SAIC, I had the opportunity to learn from talented artists who enriched my visual acuity, empowered me, and instilled confidence in bringing my unique artistic perspective and constant interest in the Field of Fashion Design.

3 Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Currently I'm a freelance stylist and an independent Fashion designer.

4 What does “design” mean to you?

For me, I think the words “Design “ is focus on engaging the senses, evoking emotion, and capturing the attention and interest of the viewer.

5 What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Deconstruction, Playful Experimentation and Nonconformity. To push the boundaries is always my attention and I believe that have had a significant influence on the Fashion industry.

6 To you, what makes a “good” design?

A “ rule breaker”. These rule breakers often inspire change and push the industry to be more inclusive, sustainable, and creative. Their innovative designs can lead to new trends and a broader perspective on what fashion can be.

7 Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Avant-garde and dark aesthetic in fashion. My design often feature futuristic, exclusive silhouettes, and a gothic influence. The use of unconventional concepts and a focus on edgy, unique pieces sets my style apart.

8 Tell us about your design process.

Before design any garments, I always using stencil to capture elements from nature.I transform patterns from my collage works, Experiment with patterns, deconstructing and reconstructing them on the mannequin.

Thanks so much for Muse Design Awards giving me this incredible honor. Receiving this prize is both humbling and motivating. This prize isn't just a recognition; that will motivate me continue to strive for excellence and positive in my future career.

10 Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

I entered this project for the prize because it aligns with my deep belief in pushing boundaries and creating meaningful impact for my own personal Style and Fashion Projects. This endeavor is more than a personal pursuit; it's a commitment to innovation and sensitive creativity . Thanks Muse Design Awards for recognizing the potential in this endeavor and for honoring me the journey toward a better future.

11 What was the biggest challenge with this project?

I think one of the challenge part for the project is the creative aspect and finding inspiration. Constantly evolving your design aesthetic can be a rewarding but sometimes challenging process.

12 How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Winning this award has been a transformative experience for my career in fashion. It has provided validation and recognition, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations. The exposure gained through the award has expanded my network within the industry, connecting me with influential figures and like-minded creatives.

13 What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Innovation: Embracing creative and technological advancements to push the boundaries of design and manufacturing. Digital Transformation: Leveraging technology for e-commerce, virtual fashion shows.
