1 Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I'm Heather Lutz, founder of AromaTech, which was established in 2009 with a vision to redefine home scenting through sophistication and innovation. AromaTech offers the most premium home scenting systems available, featuring an unmatched scent library and cutting-edge diffusers. Our technology transforms any home into an elevated ambiance, setting a new standard in home fragrance.

2 What does “design” mean to you?

Design is incredibly important as we aim to blend our diffuser technology into our consumer's stylish home decor. Our sleek, ceramic Ambience Diffuser is the result of fusing functionality with style.

3 What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

The design team at AromaTech loves refined design. We love brands that fuse sleek, refined aesthetics and lines with cutting edge technology.

4 To you, what makes a “good” design?

Functionality and aesthetics must not be compromised. A good design is the perfect balance between form and function, where one enhances the other.

5 Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

AromaTech design sensibility is defined by contemporary minimalism with a touch of warmth. We believe our diffuser should blend seamlessly into our consumers' home decor.

6 Tell us about your design process.

The design team conducted an extensive research process, exploring a wide range of top-rated home decor stores to gather insights on current trends, innovative products, and effective design strategies.

7 Congratulations! As the winner of the 2024 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

We're thrilled about this achievement! Our team put in a tremendous amount of effort on this design and launch, and receiving this award is incredibly validating. We truly believe it is the most stylish diffuser available on the market.

8 Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2024 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

We chose to enter this award to help recognize our team who made this design become a reality for us. With so many competitors in the diffuser market, standing out is really important. We know our system is unparalleled in the premium home scenting it delivers and we hope to share our system with a broader consumer base.

9 What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge was ensuring this new diffuser was going to give our consumers an amazing home scenting experience. We wanted to highlight the beautiful artisanal ceramic shell without compromising the nebulizing technology component. We had to work extremely close with our vendors and design team to achieve this on a short market timeline.

10 How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

This award has not only validated our design team's hard work but has also greatly fueled their enthusiasm to develop even more innovative diffusers in the future.

11 What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

Vancouver's design industry stands out for its distinctive blend of elements that differentiate it from other design hubs: its stunning natural environment, diverse global influences, and vibrant entrepreneurial spirit. These factors collectively create a dynamic and innovative atmosphere that continually pushes creative boundaries.

12 Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

We really think there will be a focus on mental wellbeing: Products designed to promote relaxation, focus, and mental well-being will likely see an increase in demand which is a successful avenue for home scenting.

13 If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Focus on Quality over Quantity: It's better to have a few well-developed projects than a large collection of mediocre ones. Showcase your design process, problem-solving skills, and visual communication abilities.

14 What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

I would recommend Pecler! I think anybody who is looking to improve their skills should begin with this.

15 Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

The design team at AromaTech has listened to Taylor Swift's newest album, The Tortured Poets Department, a combined 1,389 times.

16 Who has inspired you in your life and why?

AromaTech is very inspired by women in the design world. For example: Kelly Goto: Founder of Kelly Wearstler Studio, a design firm focused on high-end interiors and products. Known for her bold and luxurious aesthetic. Ammunition Design Co. (founded by Michelle Chang): An award-winning design studio known for their work on consumer electronics, wearables, and other innovative products. Leah Buechley: A designer and educator who focuses on the intersection of technology and craft. Known for her work on electronic textiles and interactive installations.

17 What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

The key to AromaTechs success is that we do not compromise in the quality of our products. We aim to bring the absolute best products to market for our consumers!

18 Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

We really appreciate being recognized for our Ambience Diffuser design. There are no other powerful nebulizing diffusers with an artisanal ceramic shell on the market. We are really proud of this product design and are happy to see how much our customers are loving it too!
