Modern Zen

Inspired by the concept of “Zen,” this design represents the pursuit of tranquility and stability in life. The three-generation family consists of members living and working in Japan, China and Taiwan, contributing to its cultural richness. Thus, the designer wishes to embody the family bonding and its harmony.

Incorporating the zenful window lattice and the handicraft techniques, the modern minimalist style has its smooth and zenful characteristics. With thoughtful material selection of purity and use of techniques, the design contains symbolic meanings, flourishing throughout the living space.

Aged green crystallized stones are pasted to form a circular relief art on the main wall of the foyer. With inner lighting, it symbolizes a thriving career and future like sunrise. The collage of stone crystals is like a splash ink painting with a clear moon that lights up the space. The inspiration of completeness and starting point of calmness set the tone for the whole space.

Earthly tone is adopted mainly with light and dark warm hues as embellishment. The wooden texture is apparent yet elegant. The window lattice is made of wood scraps with traditional craftsmanship without need of varnish. The two semicircles composed of multiple lines connect the emotions of family members, while the image of concentric circles represents unity of the family. Light and shadows pass through the area, defining the spaces.

The living room, axis of the space, leads to other rest areas. The weight of the dark tone, the tranquil beauty of Japanese style and the stone materials make a picturesque scenery. The exquisiteness and elegance of the private area echoes the tone of the public areas. Woven material is applied on the master bedroom wall, which represents family and achievement the owner weaves for years, like the close bonds among the members. The woven wall is also hand made with leather strips, achieving goals of recycling economy and sustainability.
