ernOrgan is inspired by ferns and aims to create a man-made living plant while reusing wasted plastic packaging. The plant's body consists of a hub core, muscle, and blade, with the hub core having ambient awareness that includes sound, light, and touch. Additionally, it allows for the expansion of other sensors. The hub core is connected to the motors and controls the muscle. The muscle pulls in and releases through the ambient information input and algorithm, causing the blade to wave up and down by rolling and hanging it. The blade is composed of a plastic egg tray that is uniquely structured to protect the soft egg and allows for bending into a particular curve.
fernOrgan aims to draw more attention to the increasing plastic waste that causes marine pollution in our environment. This project proposes a novel strategy to use mass-produced plastic matter (egg packages) as a critical material for creating beauty from its geometric characteristics into a Kinect installation. It visualizes ambient information, and people can interact with fernOrgan through clapping, similar to how some natural plants fold and transform to avoid harm when touched.
