About The Entry
Magic Square Pavilion is an elegant urban landmark set along the west bund of Huangpu River in Shanghai. Drawing on a deep understanding of local waterfront lifestyles and public space dynamics, the pavilion serves as an open, all-weather shelter for diverse daily activities. Inspired by ancient Chinese numerical principles of the Hetu LuoShu, the pavilion’s design is articulated through eight identically shaped yet differently oriented single-slope roofs. These roof forms are dictated by a unique interplay of numerical parameters—distinguishing odd from even and large from small—imbuing the pavilion with a subtle, layered spatial logic. Despite its compact footprint, the pavilion achieves a refined balance between nature and built form, uniting robust steel and warm timber into a light yet resilient load-bearing system. Meticulous detailing in roof engineering, drainage, and waterproofing underscores the project’s technical innovation. Completed in a record 75 days from design to finish—and constructed within a challenging 20-day window under inclement weather—the pavilion epitomizes the fusion of cultural depth with Shanghai’s urban fabric.
