The Church of Roots is a community-centered church in Madagascar that redefines the role of sacred space by integrating spirituality, sustenance, and sustainability. Rooted in the daily life of the local people, the design merges the church with a communal farmland that nourishes both body and spirit. Constructed from indigenous materials—red earth walls, bamboo, and thatched roofing—the architecture honors vernacular traditions while embracing environmental resilience.
Inspired by the form of a great tree, the church’s canopy provides generous shade for worshippers and neighbors alike. This iconic structure also functions as a rainwater harvester, channeling water to irrigate the surrounding farmland, reinforcing the cyclical relationship between nature, faith, and community. The Church of Roots is more than a place of worship—it is a living, growing hub where people gather, cultivate, and thrive together.
