Taining Huada Hotel is nestled in the historic core of Taining County, Fujian Province, just steps from Shangshu Di—a nationally protected Ming-dynasty residence celebrated for its architectural grandeur. The design embraces a “dialogue between past and present,” moving beyond nostalgic imitation to distill the spatial logic and decorative spirit of the region’s traditional “Three Halls, Nine Buildings” (San Ting Jiu Dong) layout, reinterpreted through contemporary materials and construction techniques.
Inspired by Shangshu Di’s axial symmetry, intricate carvings, and signature red-black-gold palette, the project abstracts these elements into a cohesive modern language. In the lobby, metal frameworks subtly echo timber roof trusses, while laser-cut panels present refined interpretations of classical woodcarving motifs—displayed like curated artifacts under focused lighting. Corridors evoke the layered depth of ancient alleyways through linear lighting and sculptural metal screens; guest rooms offer tranquility with naturally dyed bamboo-woven headboards; and public areas blend shallow reflecting pools, weathered stone, and glass to reinterpret the borrowed scenery of classical Chinese gardens.
To balance the gravitas of historical formality with modern expectations of comfort, the design employs open partitions, geometrically distilled patterns, and carefully calibrated color tones. A thoughtful material palette—featuring electroplated metals, CNC-carved timber details, and locally sourced, low-impact finishes—delivers visual refinement, durability, and sustainability. Passive strategies such as optimized daylighting, natural ventilation, and low-VOC materials further minimize environmental impact.
More than a premium hospitality destination, the hotel becomes a living bridge between eras, awakening cultural memory while inviting guests to experience heritage through a distinctly contemporary lens.
