About The Entry

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA), the design of its history museum fundamentally reimagines how institutional memory can be conveyed spatially. Moving beyond the static, enclosed typology of traditional exhibition halls, the project establishes itself as an immersive narrative. It seamlessly integrates architecture, landscape, interior space, and exhibition design to transform historical engagement from passive viewing into an active, embodied process of meaning-making.

The museum’s strategic location revitalizes a previously underused elevated platform on the second floor, creating a vibrant and accessible public nexus. This intervention strengthens spatial connectivity and thoughtfully integrates the museum into the daily rhythm of campus life.

The spatial narrative is organized around six defining phases of GAFA’s evolution, arranged in a deliberate chronological sequence. This clear structure is enriched through an intertextual layering of archival documents, artworks, and key historical events. Immersive media is thoughtfully incorporated into the architectural environment, synthesizing structures, images, and sounds to deliver a multi-sensory experience. This approach encourages visitors to become active interpreters, forging their own dialogues with the past.

More than a conventional archive, the history museum serves as a dynamic platform for cultural reflection. It honors GAFA’s deep-rooted Lingnan heritage while employing a contemporary architectural language. By prioritizing spatial narratives over symbolic forms, the project offers a compelling model for how educational institutions can engage critically with their history—fostering a living connection between collective memory, present identity, and future aspiration.
