About The Entry

Statera: A Showcase of Elegance and Efficiency

Statera is a 6-foot lightweight coffee table that intertwines advanced structural logic and reclaimed materials into a refined piece of functional art. Through a floating glass surface and a sculptural wooden base, the table demonstrates how computational design and regenerative sourcing can redefine elegance, efficiency, and material responsibility in contemporary furniture.

Natural structures like a dragon fly wing balance performance and elegance through alignment of mass and force, not excess. Statera draws directly from this logic, translating nature’s structural intelligence into an elegant piece of furniture. The design has emerged from axial forces under load, rather than conventional form making, producing a lightweight funicular form that is both stable and visually effortless.

Statera is defined by the interplay of two complementary structural systems, one working in tension, the other in compression, creating a balance between lightness and stability

The floating glass surface is supported by a discreet cable truss that spans the three corners of the table. Acting like a lightweight bridge, it allows the tabletop to appear suspended while efficiently distributing loads with minimal material.

The sculptural wooden base is shaped as a funicular structure, carrying forces primarily through compression. This geometry delivers strength and stability while maximizing lightness, grounding the table both structurally and visually.

Statera’s spatial geometry demanded advanced fabrication workflows, iterative prototyping, and careful detailing. Close collaboration between HKS LINE and SpaceCraft allowed the design’s computational intent to be realized with clarity and precision in the built artifact.

Sustainability was integral to the project from the outset. In partnership with Cambium Carbon, the table was fabricated using reclaimed urban wood sourced from fallen trees otherwise destined for landfills. This approach not only reduced material waste and resource extraction but also embedded a narrative of regeneration into the object itself.
