Nina Park

Designed and developed by Chinachem Group, Nina Park is the first and only wood fossil park in Hong Kong, officially opened in December 2023. The park transforms a once-fragmented shopping-mall podium into an elevated cultural landscape where deep geological history, inclusive design, and community learning converge. Previously known as the Nina Fossil Garden, the site once contained precious wood fossils isolated by steep levels, steps, and barriers that restricted public access. Through a multi-year revitalisation, the park has been re-envisioned as a barrier-free sanctuary, allowing visitors of all ages and abilities to freely explore hundreds of petrified wood fossils that span millions of years.

Across the outdoor garden, more than 30% greenery and over 20 species of trees, create a rooftop ecosystem that attracts birds, butterflies, and pollinators. Redesigned with gentle ramps and accessible pathways, the park’s landscape now serves as an outdoor classroom. Guided tree tours reveal the evolution, characteristics, and ecological relationships of these species, strengthening public awareness of conservation and biodiversity.

At the heart of the architectural transformation is the two-storey Wood Fossil Experience Centre, ingeniously crafted within the mall’s former fire-escape voids. Inspired by crystalline forms, four bold, colourful “crystal boxes” reshape previously leftover spaces into a dynamic interior museum. The centre houses 16 curated zones displaying a remarkable array of plant fossils, alongside paleontological specimens such as dinosaur eggs, ammonites, and saber toothed-cat skulls. Through tactile exhibits, multimedia storytelling, and interactive learning, the centre introduces visitors to earth sciences, plant evolution, prehistoric ecosystems, and the geology of Hong Kong.

Adjacent to the Experience Centre, the Hexagon Cinema, inspired by Hong Kong’s iconic hexagonal rock columns, functions as a multifunctional venue for talks, performances, and educational programmes. Each evening, the park comes alive with a vibrant light show combining visuals, music, and atmospheric effects, transforming the rooftop into a cultural and tourism destination.

By merging landscape, architecture, exhibition design, and public space into one seamless experience, Nina Park stands as a visionary model of urban cultural regeneration—a living museum that reconnects people with both nature and geological heritage.
