Sanctuary of Reintegration reimagines correctional architecture as civic infrastructure through adaptive reuse. Transforming an existing church and its surrounding vacant site, the project establishes a restorative justice center that bridges incarceration and community life. Building upon the church’s existing role in education and outreach, the design extends its civic function into a structured system of rehabilitation.
The project organizes public, semi-public, and secure zones into a controlled yet permeable spatial framework, allowing carefully managed interaction between inmates and the community. Programs including vocational training, healthcare, counseling, and meditation are integrated within a unified circulation system that balances accessibility with security. This spatial strategy enables gradual exposure rather than isolation, supporting rehabilitation through participation and visibility.
Architecturally, the intervention combines preservation and new construction to create a layered environment where existing and new structures operate as a cohesive system. Circulation becomes the primary organizing element, shaping relationships between programs and users while reinforcing operational clarity. The design emphasizes continuity, transparency, and human-scale experience to redefine the perception of correctional space.
By shifting from containment to reintegration, the project proposes an alternative model for correctional environments, positioning architecture as an active agent in social rehabilitation and urban reconnection.
