Shades of Time

In an era of relentless velocity, this project transforms a duplex villa into a sanctuary for a Peking University Ph.D. in psychology and entrepreneur. Facing rapid shifts between intense travel and the need for deep mental reset, the design moves beyond decoration—using light, material, and spatial narrative to construct an energy-regenerating system rooted in Eastern contemplative traditions.

I. Structural Reinvention

Recognizing the basement’s generous ceiling height, the architect inserted a mezzanine. This move accommodates a luggage archive and tea room while freeing a previously blocked window. Light and views now flow diagonally through the section, reconnecting interior and exterior.

II. Hybrid Programs

The second basement houses a monumental wooden library for over 10,000 volumes—a vessel for the mind. Opposite it, a five-meter climbing wall offers somatic release. On the ground floor, a foldable kitchen window extends the bar into the courtyard. In the basement, an indoor garden brings nature downward: “a garden within a room, a room within a garden.”

III. Layered Light

A triple strategy guides natural light into the basement: motorized skylights to the south, a translucent glass floor on the north balcony, and a glass aperture in the living room floor that projects a “vein of light” deep into the library. Handcrafted paper lamps suspended above the voids transition the atmosphere from natural luminance to a poetic, moonlit lightscape.

IV. Material Dialogue

Extensive use of reclaimed, aged timber—bearing decades of patina—meets micro-cement and glass. This is not nostalgia but a contemporary interpretation of Eastern natural aesthetics: structure as the bone, nature as the soul.

Shades of Time elevates an ordinary residence into a self-regulating ecosystem. Here, light and shadow, wood and paper, stillness and movement, interior and exterior collectively replenish physical energy and spiritual clarity—a poetic response to modern living.
