Verto

Verto is a transformable children's chair built around a quiet contradiction: children need both stillness and movement, focus and exploration, shelter and challenge. In family homes, this often forces parents to choose between furniture that supports quiet reading and furniture that supports active play. Verto refuses that choice—it holds both through a single flip.

Upright, the chair is a wrap-around cushioned seat that creates a calm, personal space for focused reading. Flipped over, the same structure becomes a climbing-and-crawling play object, with integrated wooden holds, a crawl-through opening, and rounded grip surfaces. The inverted form also opens up a small sheltered cave underneath—an intimate hiding space just large enough for one child, where they can retreat, observe, or simply enjoy the feeling of having a world of their own. No tools or locks are needed. The transition is one physical action.

The design targets children aged four to seven, a stage where physical exploration, imaginative play, and moments of solitude all support cognitive and emotional development. By combining multiple modes in one object, Verto reduces the number of items families need to buy and store.

The shell is made from vacuum-formed laminated plywood, joined by laser-cut steel connectors. Climbing holds are turned from solid hardwood and follow four ergonomic profiles scaled for small hands. The sculpted legs are built from layered plywood, sanded into a flowing form.
