The Block 11 Project of Nanjing Yihe Road

Located in Nanjing, The 11th District of the Yihe Road Historical and Cultural District is part of one of the city’s most significant modern architectural heritage areas, often known as the “Museum of Republic of China Architecture.” Comprising five historic villas, two traditional buildings, and a series of intimate courtyards, the district has been revitalized into a mixed-use commercial destination while preserving its distinctive historical character.

The lighting design is guided by the concept “A Century of Yihe: Night at the Museum.” Rather than treating the site as a conventional retail environment, the design frames the district as an open-air museum after dark: historic buildings become exhibits, courtyards become exhibition rooms, and light becomes a curatorial medium that reveals architectural memory and spatial atmosphere.

A key challenge was to balance heritage conservation with contemporary public use. The lighting adopts a restrained warm color temperature of 2700K–3000K, inspired by the soft glow of autumn sunlight beneath Nanjing’s iconic parasol trees. This palette unifies architecture and landscape, reinforces the district’s calm residential scale, and restores a sense of warmth and lived-in intimacy at night.

To minimize intervention to the protected fabric, the design relies on a low-impact “point-line-plane” strategy combining concealed in-ground luminaires, tree-mounted projectors, interior ambient light, and carefully integrated window-frame and wall-mounted fixtures. Together, these layers shape façades, entrances, and courtyard depth while maintaining a glare-controlled and visually quiet nighttime environment.

At the same time, the project introduces selective interactive lighting at key public interfaces, including a motion-responsive glass-brick installation at the entrance and programmable landscape lighting within the courtyards. These elements subtly enhance wayfinding, public engagement, and commercial vitality without compromising the historic atmosphere. The result is a heritage-sensitive nightscape that reconnects cultural memory with contemporary urban life.
