About The Entry

The Grafted Chair is an experimental seating prototype that combines computational design, robotic ceramic 3D printing, and modular assembly. Leaf venation provides its branching logic, while botanical grafting inspires how separately fabricated components meet through socket-and-peg joints.

The chair is divided into modules sized and oriented for printing and kiln firing, allowing complex geometry to be produced within equipment limits while reducing the need for support material. Rather than concealing fabrication constraints, the design makes them visible: printed layers, natural firing variation, and graft-like seams form part of the chair's identity.

By connecting parametric geometry with the material behavior of clay, The Grafted Chair proposes a new approach to ceramic furniture - one in which form, structure, fabrication, and assembly are conceived as a single system.
