About The Entry
The Flowing Series comprises teaware, vessels for spirits, and flower vessels. Rooted in traditional Chinese ceramic materials and techniques, it explores unglazed white porcelain, matte white and qingbai glazes, silver detailing, and firing in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Water serves as the central motif and narrative thread. Fine, flowing lines are incised into the warm white porcelain surface, evoking a contemplative sense of stillness and movement within Chinese aesthetic tradition.
In Chinese cultural and Chan Buddhist traditions, water is more than a natural element: it evokes purity, emptiness, nourishment, and release from worldly dust. This series does not depict water as a fixed pattern, but lets it move like a quiet breath through the vessels. Through warm white porcelain, carved flowing lines, and layered material techniques, the image of water is woven into daily objects, inviting moments of calm, clarity, and contemplation.
The teapot adopts a bold, asymmetrical curved form. Its carved lines suggest rippling water, while the knob reads as a mountain peak, turning the lid into a miniature shanshui landscape. Brushed silver on the body and knob contrast with the soft warmth of the unglazed porcelain, highlighting the landscape-like composition while creating a subtle harmony of material and color.
The liquor vessels and flower vessels extend the imagery of water through their respective forms and functions. In the unglazed pieces, the carved lines remain bare, while the fired surfaces are carefully sanded and polished to reveal the natural beauty of the porcelain body. Across the series, variations in material, glaze, silver detail, and firing atmosphere produce different surface effects: some pieces appear warm and restrained, some carry a soft silver sheen, and others reveal pale blue-white tones in shifting light.
With water as its central image and porcelain as its medium, the series transforms the everyday rituals of tea, spirits, and flowers into moments of quiet contemplation. Balancing function, craftsmanship, and visual rhythm, it offers a sense of water-like calm within the busyness of urban life.
