About The Entry
M Residence is the transformation of a 1936 duplex in Toorak, Melbourne, for a client with a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, materiality and European design traditions. Conceived as a complete reimagining of the home, the interiors were guided by a shared belief in timelessness, restraint and enduring quality. Each space was approached with a sense of continuity, creating a cohesive interior language defined by carefully considered proportions, rich natural materials and an atmosphere of calm sophistication.
The bathrooms continue these ideas with clarity and consistency, extending the material language that runs throughout the residence. Calacatta Viola marble, dark timber, natural brass and seamless microcement are brought together through careful composition, creating spaces that feel both refined and grounded. Richness is found not through embellishment, but through the quality of the materials themselves and the precision with which they are resolved.
In the primary ensuite, a floating Calacatta Viola marble vanity forms the focal point of the room. The stone's distinctive burgundy veining introduces depth and movement against a backdrop of seamless microcement, allowing the material to become the defining presence within the space. Conceived as a singular sculptural volume, the vanity is detailed with mitred edges and carefully aligned veining, revealing the marble in its entirety. Its suspended form lends an unexpected sense of lightness, while a floor-to-ceiling mirror positioned between the vanity elements introduces reflection and depth without interrupting the simplicity of the composition.
In the secondary bathroom, Calacatta Viola is expressed more subtly, wrapping the wall beneath the window and continuing behind the freestanding bath. Together with the repeated use of dark timber and brass accents, the marble reinforces continuity between rooms, ensuring each space feels connected to the broader vision of the home while retaining its own character.
Unified by a consistent material language and a commitment to craftsmanship, the bathrooms bring together beauty, permanence and precision in spaces that feel effortless in their final expression yet deeply considered in their execution. The result is an environment that elevates everyday rituals through thoughtful design.
