About The Entry
Conrad Residence is Studio Director Paul Conrad's own family home, located in Malvern, a leafy inner-eastern suburb of Melbourne. Conceived as both a private residence and a built expression of the studio's design philosophy, the project places interior architecture at the centre of the design process, guiding the architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting and landscape as one unified whole.
From the moment of entry, the house establishes an immediate sense of calm. Its scale is generous, with elevated ceilings, a sculptural elliptical staircase and expansive living spaces, yet the experience remains grounded and deeply comfortable. This atmosphere is carefully composed through proportion, sequence, materiality and light, creating a home that feels intimate within a larger architectural volume.
The interior journey unfolds gradually. More formal and intimate rooms at the front of the house support retreat, focus and reflection, while the rear opens into a lighter, more informal living environment connected to the Paul Bangay garden. This transition creates two distinct yet connected identities, allowing spaces to support everything from quiet occupation to shared family life.
The interiors embody what Paul describes as a “contradictory aesthetic”: minimal yet rich, restrained yet bold, poised yet relaxed. A light and controlled palette of limestone, Calacatta Paonazzo, aged brass and European oak creates clarity, while furniture, art, books and collected objects introduce depth and individuality. Materials are expressed largely in their natural state, allowing grain, texture and patina to become part of the home's ongoing character.
Lighting is integral to the experience of the residence. Each room has been designed with a specific lighting response, supporting focus in the study, connection around the dining table, and relaxation within the living spaces. Colour temperature, intensity and ambience are carefully calibrated, allowing the home to respond intuitively to different times of day and patterns of use.
Designed around the rituals of everyday family life, Conrad Residence balances refinement with comfort, creating spaces that support gathering, retreat and connection in equal measure. The home embraces the ageing of natural materials and the evolving rhythms of occupation, allowing character and patina to develop naturally over time.
