Horst Residence — Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Mosaic Pool

The Horst Residence transforms a private swimming pool into a site-specific mosaic environment inspired by the Usonian design principles of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The homeowners had already carried Wright-influenced materials, stained glass, woodwork and geometric detailing throughout the residence. The pool became the opportunity to extend that architectural language into the landscape.

Working within an unusually shaped vessel with no conventional 90-degree geometry, Mosaicist Inc. translated a geometric pattern from the interior of the home into a custom aquatic mosaic composition. Rather than correcting the pool’s asymmetry, the design embraces its angled form as part of the visual concept.

The installation required exceptional precision as the pattern transitioned across sloped and curved underwater surfaces. Small-format mosaic pieces allowed the geometry to maintain line quality, proportion and continuity throughout the pool.

A custom red-merlot mosaic inlay was also incorporated at the homeowners’ request as a personal memorial element.

The completed project brings together architecture, landscape, craftsmanship and personal meaning, transforming a functional swimming pool into a permanent work of site-specific mosaic art.
