About The Entry
Located in Wuxi’s waterfront cultural district, opposite Wuxi Grand Theater, the project brings together a grand lobby, multi-purpose hall, theater and concert hall. MoA developed an integrated lighting approach for the interior and exterior, using light to connect the performance spaces with the surrounding waterfront landscape.
The design draws from the visual qualities of Jiangnan: rippling water, layered folded lines and the filtered shadows of bamboo. These references are translated into a restrained and layered lighting language rather than literal decorative forms.
Inside, each performance space is given a lighting strategy based on its function. Concealed linear lighting defines the sloped and curved geometry of the lobby, while integrated step lighting supports circulation and enhances the rhythm of the space. In the multi-purpose hall, a flexible lighting system allows the space to shift between gatherings, screenings and performances. In the theater, linear lighting follows the curved acoustic walls and is controlled according to different operating modes. The concert hall is intentionally kept dark during performances, with decorative lighting minimized to protect visual and acoustic concentration.
The same approach continues to the exterior. Light from within the transparent facade creates a soft presence at night, while low-level rooftop lighting supports outdoor cultural activities without competing with the surrounding environment. High-efficiency fixtures and intelligent zoning allow the lighting scenes to shift between everyday and festival settings mainly through dimming, reducing unnecessary equipment and energy use.
Rather than pursuing a highly illuminated landmark, the project uses light to establish a quiet relationship between architecture, performance, landscape and the waterfront. The result is a cultural venue where interior experience and the surrounding nightscape are connected through a consistent and restrained lighting approach.
