About The Entry

THE PLAYSCAPE GARDEN reimagines the community cultural centre as a cultivated civic landscape where architecture, play, learning, and collective life grow together. Conceived in response to the social fragmentation intensified by COVID-19, the project transforms an abandoned canal-edge site in Hackney, London, into a new cultural hub.

The project proposes a hybrid playscape and community centre that merges artificial structures disguised as subterranean cave formations, public canal frontage, gardens, and play structures into one interconnected landscape. Rather than a conventional institutional building of static rooms and fixed programmes, architecture becomes a dynamic terrain: a place to climb, explore, gather, rest and learn.

At the heart of the project is the idea of “tending”, inspired by Derek Jarman’s gardening philosophy, treating the urban environment as a garden to be cultivated rather than a rigid object imposed on a site. This principle informed a process in which data from gardening activities in Jarman’s garden was mapped and transformed into structural information, generating the architectural forms and exploring how architecture might respond to the rhythms of planting and cultivation. Indoor planting, tree-filled atriums, light shafts, stepped gardens, and rock structures extend this approach, introducing layered biophilic experiences into the dense urban context.

The site’s industrial canal heritage is reinterpreted as tactile public space. Terraced steps descend toward the water while dramatic tensile netting rises overhead. Visitors move through a choreographed sequence: suspended rope bridges, climbing webs, courtyards, and garden rotundas. Fluid thresholds between interior and exterior create continual moments of discovery, while cafes, library and other community facilities provide places for encounter and contemplation.

THE PLAYSCAPE GARDEN is conceived not as a finished object, but as a landscape to be continually inhabited, shaped, and cared for, embedding physical play and collective discovery within the everyday life of the city. Play becomes a way of tending to the city—cultivating curiosity and social connection, while fostering a renewed relationship with nature through everyday acts of exploration and encounter. Architecture therefore becomes less a container for community life than a living civic terrain: one that evolves through the people who use, inhabit, and care for it.
