About The Entry
Located in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, this kindergarten reinterprets the spatial and cultural logic of the Mongolian ger through a contemporary architectural language. Rather than reproducing its traditional form, the project abstracts its essential qualities—gathering, enclosure, centrality, and woven construction—into a cluster of small, interconnected learning pavilions.
Each pavilion is expressed as a simple colored volume, with a transparent ground floor and perforated aluminum upper levels. Their compact scale creates a child-oriented environment, while bridges connect the individual buildings into a continuous spatial network. These bridges are wrapped with irregular woven structures, transforming circulation into a place for play, exploration, and social interaction.
Inside, weaving becomes an architectural system rather than decoration. Layered rope surfaces create climbing areas, suspended reading spaces, resting zones, and soft transitions between floors. White rope forms the primary spatial field, while limited red and blue structural lines introduce rhythm and visual orientation. The interiors remain open and luminous, with daylight filtered through perforated façades and reflected by stainless-steel columns.
The courtyard extends this language outdoors through running paths, climbing landscapes, soft topography, sand play, and woven structures. Instead of separating learning and play, the project treats movement, gathering, and exploration as part of everyday education.
Through color, material, transparency, and weaving, the kindergarten transforms cultural memory into a contemporary environment for children—one that is playful without becoming literal, and culturally rooted without relying on imitation.
