About The Entry

Project Title: Cocoon – Sustainable Luminaire

Category: Sustainable Living / Environmental / Lighting Design

In modern sheet-mask manufacturing, high-volume production typically generates 5% to 10% of non-woven fabric offcuts during the die-cutting process. While these spunlace remnants—composed of natural and regenerated cellulosic fibers—are relatively straightforward to collect and sort, their bulky volume presents substantial challenges in storage, logistics, and resource waste.

Cocoon is a concept luminaire born out of the circular economy, specifically designed to transform post-industrial waste into an evocative, functional design object. Developed in collaboration with Innovation Materials Co., Ltd., the piece upcycles discarded rayon non-woven edge trimmings. The surplus fabric is precision-slit into 0.3 cm ribbons and meticulously hand-woven using plain-weave techniques into a sculptural, hollow cylindrical cocoon.

At the core of this dense, tactile textile sheath lies an integrated LED light strip. When illuminated, a dramatic fluorescent pink glow filters through the intricate woven apertures, evoking the vivid imagery of a living organism incubating and breathing within. The rhythmic interplay of light and shadow highlights the fibrous texture of the woven material, simulating a vital heartbeat that brings inorganic industrial residue to life.

Embodying a biomimetic approach, Cocoon deeply explores the concepts of regeneration, metamorphosis, and ecological symbiosis. By translating voluminous factory offcuts into a warm, contemplative luminaire, the work redefines the value of overlooked industrial by-products through traditional craft and contemporary lighting aesthetics.

Beyond its sculptural presence, Cocoon serves as a poignant visual metaphor for ongoing environmental stewardship. It prompts viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between industrial economic development and ecological preservation, urging industries and consumers alike to embrace tangible, creative solutions to climate change and pollution. Cocoon is not merely a lighting fixture; it is a manifestation of rebirth, weaving sustainable responsibility directly into the fabric of daily life.
