About The Entry

JUMUKYAGWANG (晝墨夜光, “ink by day, glow by night”) is a graphic design project that reinterprets the Korean name seal as a personal branding object.

Today, names pass quickly across screens. They are typed, scrolled past and forgotten. In Korea, a name was once carved into a seal and pressed onto paper as a personal mark, a small graphic identity that stayed. As global interest in Korean culture grows, this project asks how that tradition can speak in a contemporary visual language without becoming a souvenir.

The concept joins two materials that seem to be opposites. Ink is the soot left after fire. Phosphorescence is the glow left after light. Both bring back something that has already disappeared. Stamped in ink, a name remains as a lasting trace by day. Stamped in phosphorescent pigment, the same name returns as an afterglow by night. One seal, two ways of being remembered.

A graphic system turns each name into a seal face using four construction principles: a clear boundary, shared axes, repeated strokes and balanced space. The same rules extend from the seal face to the seal body, in square, hexagonal and round forms, and to the case, so every element belongs to one graphic language.

The identity is deliberately quiet. The palette is limited to Ink Black, Daylight, a soft grey green, and Glow, a pale luminous green. The logotype, typography and layouts follow the same grid as the seals, giving the brand a minimal, editorial and contemporary Korean tone. The slogan summarises the idea: Ink by day. Glow by night.

The system was tested as a physical prototype: a case holding three seal forms with caps and interchangeable ink and glow pads. The seals were stamped on hanji, traditional Korean paper, and photographed in both light and darkness to confirm that the mark works in each condition.

JUMUKYAGWANG proposes the seal not as a relic, but as a living way to leave a name behind.
