About The Entry

Timber and Light at Dusk translates the homeowner's childhood memories of Japan into a compact home defined by timber, soft light, and a carefully planned loft. The interplay of light and shadow through wooden latticework, together with tatami and paper doors, recalls familiar settings. Warm materials and considered negative space establish a restrained interior that feels personal, comfortable, and suited to everyday living.

Within a limited footprint, the loft extends the interior vertically, allowing spaces to unfold across two levels. A wooden bridge that appears to float connects the bedrooms on either side, introducing a distinct architectural feature and layered views through the home. Timber links the upper and lower levels visually, creating continuity between the shared living spaces and the more private areas above.

On the main level, the living room, dining area, and kitchen share an open layout. Extended sightlines and clear circulation give the compact interior a greater sense of spaciousness. Wooden furniture, woven rattan, and modular kitchen cabinetry with a woodgrain finish create a consistent material language. The restrained palette lets the grain of the wood and the changing patterns of light remain the focus of each space. A multifunctional desk accommodates reading, working, and dining, making a single area useful throughout the day.

Storage is integrated into the design to keep daily necessities accessible and the interior orderly. A concealed shoe cabinet maintains a clean entrance, while wall storage is hidden behind vertical wooden slats. The slatted surfaces add depth and visual rhythm without exposing the contents of the cabinets. Storage within the tea room also supports everyday use, helping the small space remain convenient and easy to maintain.

In the bedrooms, Japanese shoji doors filter daylight and preserve visual openness. A small tea room tucked into the bedroom offers a quiet setting for tea and reading, evoking the restful atmosphere of a Japanese inn. Warm linear lighting within aluminum channels combines with indirect illumination to soften the interior and emphasize its textures. Through these coordinated details, the project brings the homeowner's memories into daily life while meeting the practical needs of a compact home.
