The Guiding Light
Light is not in space. Light is space.
What if a landmark were defined not by its silhouette, but by the atmosphere it creates?
The Guiding Light reimagines illumination as architecture's primary material. Rather than lighting a finished form, it uses light to draw temporary boundaries, suggest movement, and make the invisible volume of the city perceptible.
Developed through physical models and digital explorations of light, geometry, and perception, the proposal translates these investigations into an architectural experience. A series of hyperbolic paraboloid glass panels envelop a central vertical circulation core, refracting and projecting light beyond the structure's physical boundaries. Luminous patterns unfold across the ground and dissolve into the surrounding atmosphere, creating shifting fields of reflection, shadow, and haze.
Envisioned for colder regions shaped by long winter nights and fog, The Guiding Light serves as both a gathering place and an urban beacon. From afar, it becomes a luminous point of orientation; up close, its architecture extends beyond its physical envelope. People move through projected patterns, occupy their shifting edges and become participants in an atmospheric experience that changes with light, weather and time.
The Guiding Light proposes an artificial nature: a constructed atmosphere where material, environment and human presence continually redefine space. Its monumentality lies not in the permanence of its form, but in the fleeting experiences it makes possible, a public landmark defined as much by what is felt as by what is seen.
