U-fun is an upscale, lifestyle retail destination in the heart of Chengdu. Encompassing leisure, entertainment, shopping, culture and art – the development has been
designed for young families and travelers to the city.
The concept aims to create a bespoke experience for visitors that goes well beyond the idea of a traditional shopping mall. Uniting architecture, interior design, environmental graphics, landscape and art installations, the holistic approach establishes an attractive proposition for visitors to central Chengdu.
The linear nature of the site posed challenges for the design. Extremely long and narrow, a creative approach was needed to reduce the overall distance that visitors would be required to walk, and in turn deliver an experience that would draw people back time and again. Zoning was used to carve up unique character areas throughout the destination, each with their own environment and offering.
The eye-catching architectural concept draws inspiration from the art of origami to form curvilinear designs and an interesting matrix of faceted façade systems for the long, linear building. The dramatic entrances make use of glass and skylights to enhance visibility both inside and out.
Extending the same methodology to the interiors, the three internal zones create a sense-of-orientation.
The project invests in a number of experiential and interactive features throughout, with a distinct focus on children’s learning. These include a musical water fountain, a rooftop children’s playground, the U-pets garden for pets, as well as an art exhibition space that seeks to bring a calendar of changing experiences for visitors of all ages.
A thematic concept of “Art · Lifestyle · Symbiosis”, along with experiential and interactive features helps nurture a new lifestyle through art and nature. In collaboration with a Japanese media art design company, a unique interactive wedding flower staircase ‘Sky Steps’ gives a new romantic experience and Instagram opportunity for visitors. The space connects to an outdoor garden venue designed as a destination for wedding ceremonies and occasions, taking advantage of U-fun’s unique central location.
